We have certain issues to clear up before we can continue any form of relationship, business or otherwise. Let's lay our cards on the table: I am Yakuza, and I know you worked for Salvatore's family. I can give you work with our organization, but first you must prove to me that your ties with the Mafia are truly broken. Salvatore Leone will be leaving Luigi's in about three hours time. Make sure he doesn't reach his club alive. Meanwhile, Maria and I will catch up on old times.
~ Asuka Kasen to Claude.

Asuka Kasen is the tritagonist of the 2001 video game Grand Theft Auto III and major character in its 2004 prequel Grand Theft Auto Advance.

She is the co-leader of Liberty City's Yakuza and later leader after her brother Kenji Kasen's death. Known for her torture, security and information retrieval skills, Asuka comes across Mike and Claude, two promising hitmen, in 2000 and 2001 respectively, leading her to recruit them to do all her dirty work to make her criminal organization the most powerful of the Liberty State.

In GTA III, she was voiced by Lianna Pai.

Her Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

Grand Theft Auto Advance[]

  • Doesn't allow the Colombian Cartel to distribute their merchandise in her territory, which makes Cisco order Mike to kidnap her niece Yuka.
  • Hires Mike to rescue Yuka despite paying the ransom demanded by Cisco, resulting in Mike killing some of Cisco's men.
  • Sends Mike to visit the Pachinko World and order the casino's owner to pay her protection or kill him and burn down his business, assuring Mike that she harshly punishes the pones who fail her, willing to even punish him too if he fails as well, prompting Mike to fulfill her orders.
    • Although Mike has the option to spare Pachinko World's owner and kill instead the corrupt police officer who extorts him, Asuka laments that he didn't destroy the casino and advises him to not be so gentle next time.
  • Instructs Mike to break the arm of the Vice City Mambas quarterback with a baseball bat just so she can win bets she made for the Liberty City Cocks. Though she does ask him to leave the other players unharmed, she just asks him to do so so they can be ready for an upcoming full lining.
  • Orders the assassination of Vinewood actor Biff Rock for rejecting her advances, requesting Mike to bring her his crocodile shoes as a souvenir, leading Mike to kill Biff's bodyguards in exchange of his shoes, though Mike can decide whether to kill Biff or not.
  • Sends Mike to capture the responsible who supplies raw fugu fish to her sushi restaurants and bring him with his fish truck to her so she can complain to the fishing syndicate. Once Mike delivers the driver responsible, who is certain he will die for his actions in spite of having been forced by King Courtney and the Yardies to deliver the fish in that estate, Asuka reveals her intentions to have his eyes removed so he doesn't see how fugu fish eat him alive, horrifying Mike.
    • Though she orders Mike to spare and reward any innocent drivers he comes across to open their trucks while looking for the responsible one, Asuka gives him the permission to beat them up if they don't comply.
  • Has Mike capture fifteen or more Mafia members by using a katana to threaten them in order for her to have those men shipped to Asia as servants because the Mafia wanted to get involved in her imporation-exportation business.
  • Dispatches Mike to murder a pimo who stalks her geishas, asking him to do so as the rest of her men are busy dealing with gang wars against the Mafia back in Japan.
  • Opts to assist Mike in killing King Courtney and his Yardies by supplying him with a few of her men, but rather than being out of affection for sleeping with her or gratitude for obeying her, Asuka does it so she can drive the Yardies away from her domains, swearing to Mike that he is just a means to an end and leaving him to his fate so she can avoid being possibly killed by the Mafia.
    • Even her men, if they don't die during the Yardie massacre, flee the scene after Mike kills all of King Courtney's men, leaving him with a heavily injured King Courtney as the Liberty City Police Department arrives, which forces Mike to steal a tank and cause lots of destruction and deaths so he can flee from Liberty City to never come back.

Grand Theft Auto III[]

  • Orders Claude to kill Salvatore Leone just to show her that his ties with the Leone Family and by extension the Mafia are gone (although Salvatore arguably deserved it). She then praises Claude for committing the murder, opining that she likes men willing to kill.
  • Has Claude get rid of all the FBI/Mafia spies that try to catch him.
  • Requests Claude to kill a voyeuristic journalist who investigates her crimes.
  • Sends Claude to kill Tanner, an undercover cop whose car she tracks down with a device.
  • Speaks highly about Claude to her brother Kenji, leading him to order Claude to do things for the Yakuza like rescuing a Yakuza Kanbu by opening a hole up in the police station, stealing cars for one of his acquaintances, massacring Colombian Cartel members who work with the Yardies, collecting protection money by killing those with or those robbing the money from Yakuza clients and killing at least eight Yardie drug dealers.
  • Captures the gunshot-injured Miguel to torture him to extract information from the Colombian Cartel and to satisfy herself, hitting Miguel with a stick under her suspicions that he killed Kenji (unaware that Claude was the one who did it) and swearing that she will wipe out all of the Colombian Cartel's members.
  • Ties up Miguel to a pipe and slaps him with her stick to find out Catalina's activities.
  • Orders Claude to trick Catalina's three squadrons to follow him to Pike Creek where her men blow them up and their cars with their guns.
  • Asks Claude to put Kappa Coffee House out of service to not let the Colombian Cartel sell SPANK at their nine street stands, soliciting him to smash the service to splinters, which gets Claude in trouble with the Colombians and the Liberty City Police Department when they become aware.
  • Teaches a bored Maria Latore to torture Miguel to learn about a Colombian plane full of SPANK by telling her to prod him, leading Latore to accidentally pick one of Miguel's eyes out.
    • Although Miguel is seen later on with his eyes intact in the cutscene where Claude finds his corpse next mission, this could have been an oversight or Asuka just told him that he had lost an eye to psychologically torture him.
  • Sends Claude to shoot down the Colombian plane with a bazooka as it prepares to land on Liberty City before torturing Miguel with chilly oil.
  • Her offscreen death at Catalina's hands isn't played for sympathy.
  • Although the Heinous Standards of the 3D Universe are high with the likes of Toni Cipriani, Donald Love, Carl Johnson, Officer Tenpenny, Big Smoke, Officer Pulaski, Snakehead, Catalina and Marty Jay Williams, Asuka's cruel and brutal torture methods are unique enough to stand out.

What Prevents Her from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • She does care for her family and friends, such as her niece Yuka, her brother Kenji, and her friend Maria Latore, going as far to hire Mike to deliver the ransom and rescue Yuka from the Colombian Cartel, wishing to avenge Kenji's death by any means like torturing Miguel under the belief that he had killed him (though it was actually Claude, but Asuka was not aware of this) or planning to kill all the Cartel and protecting Latore from her husband Salvatore Leone, even though she apparently subjects her to some of her fetishes.
  • She shows genuine respect and affability, for some individuals:
    • Expresses her condolences for Mike's apparent loss of Vinnie, promising to send her men to investigate his "death" and discover who killed him.
    • Does seem to treat the men and women who serve her faithfully well, including Claude. She’s the only one who didn’t betray him (in fact he betrays her by killing her brother), even giving him a safehouse. She possibly cares for her geishas enough to send Mike to kill the pimp who was stalking them.
