~ Arruda after finding Eduardo at his uncle's house, only to be interrupted by Joe. |
Arruda is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Francisco) of the portuguese Netflix series Turn of the Tide. He is a ruthless drug lord, who plans on gaining as much money and power through the cocaine that landed in the Azores. He is also Sílvia Arruda's father and archenemy.
He is portrayed by Albano Jerónimo.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- Despite genuinely loving Sílvia, Arruda is easily the most abusive parent in the show, as even the members of the italian mafia are shown to be more caring towards their family members. His care for Sílvia is also shown to not be able to stop his ambitions, with even Arruda's ex-wife even admitting that his need for power is stronger than the love he has for his family.
- He is incredibly abusive towards Zé, and mistreats him sometimes for no reason other than his own enjoyment. This is despite the fact that for most of the show, he was loyal to him.
- He is the most heinous character in this series, and is able to pass the general standards with his actions, something which even Monti isn't able to accomplish despite being more personal towards Eduardo than Arruda is.
- He is shown to be homophobic, as seen with his interactions with Carlinhos and Ian.
- While he has some comedic moments, none of them destract from his actions, and he's taken far more seriously after episode 3, with him having little to no comedic moments at that point.
Backstory[]
- At some point in his life, he became a drug lord and planned on spreading his business to the mainland.
- He presumably put Zé into his drug business after he became his cab driver, and told Zé that, despite the awful ways he treated him, he should be thankful because he now has a job because of him.
- He was an absent father during most of Sílvia's childhood, and when he was, he would sometimes have her go through traumatic events, like making her go hunting for rabbits after she watched Bambi and was still saddened by the death of the titular character's mother.
- Sílvia would eventually start to despise her father to the point she started to refer him only by his last name.
Turn of the Tide[]
- In his first scene, after seeing Eduardo's dog Sky, he grabbed her and made plans to have her breed with another cattle dog, and when Eduardo tried to get her back, he almost allowed his henchman, the Lavrador, to kill him.
- Despite Eduardo giving him a kilo of cocaine for Sky, Arruda made it clear he still had unfinished business with him.
- While he is shown in the walk made for the death of a teenager caused by the use of cocaine, it is unknown how he felt in those moments, or the reason he was there to begin with. He also continues trying to sell cocaine and dismisses the death of the teenager as bad for business as it became news and thus the police would come to Rabo de Peixe to stop the drug trafficking.
- He uses children to get him the cocaine, and when one of the kids asked him for two ice creams instead of one, Arruda threatened to beat him up.
- Zé believes that Arruda would keep all the money he gained from the deals of cocaine to himself, with Arruda not denying it and instead deciding to mock Zé's mother, causing the latter to leave the meeting in the fit of rage.
- After seeing Zé selling drug in the streets, he broke into his car, beat him up, and broke one of his fingers, telling him that he wouldn't warn him not to sell again in the streets if he did.
- Out of the mere suspition that he may have talked with the police, Arruda had Zé brought to one of the holes in the Furnas, where he had him locked in there in the hopes to have him boiled alive. Fortunately, Zé was able to survive due to a man appearing in the mourning, but was still scarred in several parts of his body.
- He also refused to hear Zé's pleas and him telling Arruda that he didn't snitch on the police.
- This would eventually lead to Zé betraying Arruda and helping Eduardo and his friends so he could have Arruda killed.
- When Eduardo defended Carlinhos, Arruda threw him to a wall, with the Lavrador then threatening to break his neck with a baseball bat.
- He told Eduardo and his friends about what happened to Zé and taunted the latter during this. This shocks Eduardo and even Rafael (the latter of whom later proved to have no problem using a child to sell cocaine which he knew would only significantly hurt the buyer).
- After finding out that Eduardo and his friends were trying to hide cocaine from him, he beat up Eduardo and threatened him with a baseball bat at his throat to have him say where the cocaine was.
- He threatened to throw Eduardo in one of the Furnas holes if he ever found out Eduardo was hiding something from him.
- He had Zé sniff something he was not sure was cocaine, which hurt his diguestive system and caused him to start deficating.
- He beat up a kid who he found selling cocaine, causing him to get a black eye.
- He manipulated Rafael, who had breaken down and begged for his help because of how he was hurt for indirectly causing Sílvia's overdose, to have him steal the cocaine from his friends, and after this, he strangled with a rope before dropping his body into the ocean.
- Zé even points out that Arruda killed Rafael in cold blood and he had done nothing wrong against him.
- This would ultimately lead to Sílvia betraying Arruda and working with Eduardo to have him killed after finding out he was the one who killed Rafael.
- While going to the middle of the ocean to have Rafael killed, he started singing "Ilhas de Bruma" to taunt Zé, since he sang it before having Zé thrown into the Furnas' holes.
- During his time training Sílvia how to shoot a rifle, he mocked Rafael, saying that he ran away like a rat and that he was better than him because he remembered her birthday.
- He only decided to help Bruna and Ian with the Magnussons because he thought he would get money from the latter, and had no problem mistreating Ian even when doing so.
- He threatened to break one of Ian's arms if he didn't sit down.
- While Ian was explaining what happened with the Mugnussons, he sexually harassed Ian by asking if he wanted to give him a blowjob, and made Ian put a popcorn in his mouth.
- When Ian tried to leave, Arruda pressed on his chest and forced him to sit down.
- After finding out that Zé betrayed him and taunted him about Sílvia betraying him as well, Arruda headbutted him and threw off a lighthouse, killing him.
- He went to Carlinhos' mother's house, killed one of her birds, and threatened her to tell him where Eduardo and his friends were.
- After Eduardo confronted him about Rafael's death, Arruda denied his responsibility and beat up Eduardo with his pistol, before having his henchmen kill Eduardo's uncle Joe, Sílvia, and Carlinhos.
- During the shootout, Joe's fish Red was killed.
- He holded Eduardo at gunpoint and threatened to blow his head up if he didn't tell him where the cocaine was.
- After Sílvia tried to shoot him, Arruda tried to chocke her to deatn before getting killed by Eduardo with an harpoon.
- While one can argue that his death is meant to be played for sympathy, as a sad music plays in the backround and Eduardo and Sílvia cry in the scene after it, it is only because, for Sílvia, she lost her father, and for Eduardo for being his first murder, and even the latter admits that it was justice for Rafael and for all the things Arruda had done.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- While he was absent for most of her life, he still clearly loved Sílvia. He told Rafael use the money he gave him for the hashish to buy a gift for Sílvia, he offered to help her take care of her mother's house and tried to get closer to her while they were going to get a statuette of the Virgin Mary, and took care fo her after she suffered from an overdose. While he did try to kill her after her betrayal, he was still saddened by it and his voice when he asked her if she wanted to kill her father seemed like he was crying. However, because of how he tried to kill her, this is a very minor prevention in the end.
- He has a genuine friendship with Angustinho, as he is seen hugging him twice, and fondly calls him "foamy", which was a name Agustinho was called during their time in the military.
