“ | Yes, well, that is why I vowed to vigorously defend her despite her threatening me. There was a time when lawyers merely sought the truth if they wished for victory in court... but, alas, those days are over. Now, in the defense of justice, order, and all that is good, the end justifies the means. | „ |
~ Aristotle Means. |
Professor Aristotle Means, also known as Professor Means, is the secondary antagonist of the video game Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies.
He is a former teacher for defense attorneys at the Themis Legal Academy, a high school that prepares students for a career in the legal world. He is the one responsible for the murder of Professor Constance Courte, the framing of Juniper Woods, and the spread of his "end justifies the means" philosophy, which created several amoral attorneys and furthered the "dark age of the law."
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- While he was seemingly a benevolent and friendly teacher, he was revealed to be an incredibly condescending and aggressive person who wouldn't hesitate to harm those around him making his kindness fake.
- Taught his "end justifies the means" philosophy in the Themis Legal Academy, which would spread amoral attorneys throughout the legal system and further extend the "dark age of the law."
- Began taking bribes from parents in order to give their kids perfect grades in class.
- When Constance Courte discovered that he was taking bribes, he murdered her and framed Juniper Woods for the crime.
- Gave Hugh O'Connor a forged tape of evidence meant to incriminate Woods in the murder of Constance.
- While he did offer to defend Woods in court, this was likely only done to clear himself of the crime.
- While in court, Means repeatedly ridiculed Athena Cykes for some of her earlier mistakes in the trial, dredging up painful memories for her and giving her a PTSD attack.
- Ultimately, his "end justifies the means" philosophy is nothing more than a corrupt mindset intended to prioritize personal victories above the truth, which the series has repeatedly shown to be heavily against.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- Ultimately relies on Fridge Horror, as the series doesn't fully explore the impact he had on the "dark age of the law". That being said, the consequences of this mindset and the effect of this age have been seen throughout the series, and the "dark age of the law" plays an integral part of Dual Destinies, so this is a fairly minor prevention. In addition he also fails the standard to Kristoph Gavin who is the one who caused the “dark age of the law” to happen in the first place.
