You were right, Diana - they don't deserve our help... they only deserve destruction.
~ Morgan revealing his true self and true nature to Diana.
I am not the God of War, I am the God of truth.
~ Ares during his meeting with Wonder Woman.
Yes, Diana. Take them all. Finally you see. Look at this world. Mankind did this, not me! They are ugly... filled with hatred... weak... just like your Captain Trevor. Gone and left you nothing. And for what! Pathetic! He deserved to burn!
~ Ares to Wonder Woman.

Ares, also known as Sir Patrick Morgan and the God of War, is the main antagonist of the 2017 DC Extended Universe film Wonder Woman. He also appears as a flashback character in both Justice League and its 2021 director's cut Zack Snyder's Justice League.

He was portrayed by David Thewlis.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • When Zeus created mankind, Ares immediately despised them for just existing and used his magic to manipulate them into attacking each-other.
  • Killed Zeus and all the other gods when they refused to help him destroy humanity. It is made even worse since the Old Gods are actually his family.
  • Ever since killing the Old Gods, he spent several decades subtly manipulating humans, giving them the tools and ideas to cause mass destruction, and influenced both Erich Ludendorff and Dr. Poison to create chemical weapons, which resulted in the start of World War I, causing the deaths of millions.
  • Tried to manipulate Diana into following the exact same path as him and eradicate humanity.
  • Tempted Diana to kill Doctor Poison in revenge for Steve's death in order to corrupt her and have her give in to hatred against villainous humans.
  • While his intentions of restoring Earth to how it once was seem noble in theory, his speciesism is ultimately warped to his own warped sense of morality, as he doesn't really have any convictions at all, just delusions about people he pettily hates. He knows there are righteous humans like Steve Trevor and President Taft, and does not care, to the point of demonizing Steve's sacrifice instead of learning from it. Even if he did have some core beliefs in the past, it has certainly been subverted after he literally murdered his entire family in cold blood. His delusions are never played for sympathy at all, and they only highlight just how malevolent and sinister he is.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He has some level of standards as showcased by his attempts to convince the Old Gods and Diana later on to see his view and only fighting them when they refused to abet him after several centuries. He also did this with Diana, attempting multiple times to persuade her to destroy humanity, even after she initially rejected him. This proves Ares has a degree of honor.
  • He was able to put aside his distaste for humanity In order to help defend Earth from the New God warlord, Darkseid.
