“ | I thought you were good, Paul, but you're not good. You’re just another lying old dirty birdie and I don't think I'd better be around you for a while. And don't even think about anybody coming for you. Not the doctors, not your agent, not your family, because I never called them. Nobody knows you're here. And you better hope nothing happens to me, because if I die, you die. | „ |
~ Annie as she reveals her true colors to Paul. |
“ | I know I left my scrapbook out. I can imagine what you might be thinking of me. But you see, Paul, it's all okay. Last night it came so clear. I realized you just need more time. Eventually, you'll come to accept the idea of being here. Paul, do you know about the early days at the Kimberly diamond mines? Do you know what they did to the Native workers who stole diamonds? Don't worry, they didn't kill them. That would be like junking your Mercedes just because it had a broken spring. No, if they caught them, they had to make sure they could go on working, but they also had to make sure they could never run away. The operation was called "hobbling". | „ |

Anne Marie "Annie" Wilkes is the main antagonist in Stephen King's 1987 novel Misery and the 1990 Rob Reiner film adaptation of the same name. She is also loosely based on Genene Jones, a real-life nurse convicted of murdering her patients.
Annie is a severely mentally ill, demented and obsessive nurse (with the stereotypical traits of the nurse as a tormentor and an angel of death-type of figure). She is also the self-proclaimed biggest fan of her favorite author, Paul Sheldon.
She was portrayed by Kathy Bates.

Her Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- She was a serial killer before the story's main events, having murdered her father, college roommate (as well as her cat), and numerous hospital patients. Most of the patients were newborns and elderly.
- Though she claimed to admire and be in love with Paul, it is clear that she was instead obsessed with him, considering how she tortured him over killing off her favorite character, which proves her lack of respect to Paul's creative decisions.
- She kidnaps and tortures Paul, eventually punishing him for trying to escape. In the novel, she amputates his foot and thumb, using the latter as a cake candle. In the film, she breaks his ankles.
- In the novel, she lures a young rookie cop into the woods and then kills him with a lawnmower.
- She kills Sheriff Buster with a shotgun once he comes across the captive Paul in her basement.
- She plans on killing both Paul and herself with a revolver after he finishes the last Misery book.
- Despite the heinous standard in Stephen King's stories, Annie still stands out due to her lack of resources.
What Prevents Her from Being Pure Evil?[]
- She has a pet pig that she really loves and cares for.
- She has clear moral agency issues as she can't separate Paul's fictional world from real life.
Trivia[]
- Both Kathy Bates and Rob Reiner created a backstory for Annie, saying she was molested by her father as a child, which would really explain why he was her first victim. However, since this is never shown or stated in the final product, Annie's background lacks any childhood abuse and thus this is not a true prevention.
