NOTE: This page only refers to the novel incarnations of the Carrows, as their film incarnations were nowhere close to being considered Near Pure Evil. Therefore, only the novel incarnations of the Carrows and their villainous deeds should be put here. |
“ | Alecto, Amycus's sister, teaches Muggle Studies, which is compulsory for everyone. We've all got to listen to her explain how Muggles are like animals, stupid and dirty, and how they drive wizards into hiding by being vicious toward them, and how the natural order is being re-established. | „ |
~ Neville Longbottom about Alecto. |
Amycus and Alecto Carrow are supporting antagonists in the Harry Potter series, appearing in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The two of them are members of Lord Voldemort's Death Eaters who take over Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry.
In the film adaptations, Amycus was portrayed by Ralph Ineson and Alecto was portrayed by Suzie Toase.
Their Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Them Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- The two of them are members of the Death Eaters, a pureblood supremacist terrorist group led by Lord Voldemort which murders Muggle-borns and fights to establish a genocidal dictatorship.
- They participate in the attack on Hogwarts to kill Albus Dumbledore and cruelly mock him before Severus Snape kills him.
- During the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, Amycus repeatedly tries to attack Ginny Weasley with the Cruciatus Curse, a curse used exclusively for torture which can induce insanity through prolonged use.
- After taking over Hogwarts during the Death Eater dictatorship, they inflict a number of horrors on the student body, including:
- Forcing all students to prove magical descent, handing those who fail to do so over to the Muggle-Born Registration Commission to be sent to Azkaban to have their happy memories fed off by Dementors on trumped-up charges;
- Indoctrinating students into Death Eater ideology, with Amycus teaching them evil magic such as the Unforgivable Curses and Alecto teaching them to hate Muggles and support their domination or extermination by wizards;
- Torturing students who disobey them, most notably by forcing Dark Arts students to practice the Cruciatus Curse on those who get detention, including first-years who are only around twelve years old;
- Viciously beating students who defy censorship and spread outside news that contradicts the Death Eater narrative;
- Cutting students with knives for insulting them or refusing to torture those in detention, singling out student resistance leader Neville Longbottom for this treatment because he stood up to them;
- Planning to have everyone accused of being a member of Dumbledore's Army killed or sent to Azkaban.
- After seeing that Alecto seemingly called in a false alarm about the presence of Harry Potter in Ravenclaw Tower, Amycus plans to scapegoat some of the students to get them tortured by Voldemort instead of her, remarking "Couple of kids more or less, what's the difference?" before insulting and spitting at Professor Minerva McGonagall when she objects.
- Unlike Amycus, Alecto has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
What Prevents Them from Being Pure Evil?[]
- While their torture of students at Hogwarts, particularly forcing them to practice the Cruciatus Curse on each other, would be enough to qualify them, almost all of it takes place entirely offscreen and is merely talked about after the fact by members of Dumbledore's Army. However, given how Neville mentions that the Carrows are far worse than Dolores Umbridge, who scarred students for life by making them write with her Black Quill, this is a minor prevention.
- Amycus sincerely loves his sister, as his attempt to scapegoat the students for her apparent false alarm was done to protect her from Voldemort's wrath.
Trivia[]
- Unlike their novel counterparts, their film counterparts don't come anywhere close to Near Pure Evil due to not getting any characterization whatsoever without a single line of dialogue, as well as their crimes never getting any elaboration to make them remotely heinous at all. Also, they became scapegoats since Severus Snape murdered them by rebounding Minerva McGonagall's lethal curses (instead of being tied up and sent to Azkaban like in the books).
