“ | I'm so happy you're all on board with the plan. But let me remind you, I neutralized our enemies. I brought you the Iron Fist. I was able to keep the most important operation in our history running while you succumbed to chaos and conflict. I have proven myself to be the one and only true leader– | „ |
~ Alexandra Reid's last words before Elektra Natchios stabs her to death. |
Alexandra Reid is a major antagonist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, serving as the overarching antagonist of Daredevil and Iron Fist and the main antagonist of The Defenders. She was the founder and leader of the Hand who was obsessed with unleashing Elektra Natchios as the Black Sky, only to be killed by the very woman she was obsessed with exploiting.
She was portrayed by Sigourney Weaver.
Her Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- She believes that her life's purpose is to hold power over all life so she can accomplish power over death and have her undeserved revenge on K'un-Lun.
- Even though she's explicitly shown to be in pain from lacking elixir, it is not played for sympathy because of just how vile Reid is.
- Her tragedy comes nowhere close to explaining why she is malevolent, as it was not just losing her daughter, but also making her own life choices, that made her so villainous.
Background[]
- She perverts the teachings of K'un-Lun for her own selfish desires, resulting in her banishment.
- Along with Madame Gao, Bakuto, Murakami, and Sowande, she founds the Hand, which commits several heinous crimes such as burning Pompeii, K'un-Lun, and several other cities. She probably has a higher body count than Arnim Zola and Xu Wenwu.
- She uses several false names to mask her true nature.
Daredevil and Iron Fist[]
- As the leader of the Hand, most of the negative events in both shows can be tied back to Alexandra Reid, like the fight at Bethesda Terrace and several gory clashes across Hell's Kitchen for instance.
The Defenders[]
- She resurrects Elektra Natchios and puts her through some torturous rituals hoping to re-invigorate her. She also says unleashing her is more important than the lives of her allies, and while she seems affectionate towards her, this is only pragmatism. She eventually tells the Black Sky that nothing about her past or identity matter unless it's beneficial to the Hand, confirming that she's nothing but a tool to her.
- She doesn't care about the lives of the swordsmen she sicced on Elektra as she has become very desensitized from millennia of serial killing.
- Although she tells Murakami that she wants him to stop hunting for his own health, it is only because she wants to keep using him.
- She starts an earthquake in New York, perceiving the city as extendable.
- She tells Elektra to be more desensitized to the mass destruction the Hand causes.
- She captures Stick and tortures him. While he was always a major jerk, he still didn't deserve it.
- She has the Chaste completely destroyed.
- She becomes obsessed with abducting Danny Rand as he is the Iron Fist and the key to enriching her and the other four "fingers" of the Hand.
- When the Defenders first team up, she almost makes Elektra mass-murder everyone in the building.
- She ambushes the Defenders at a restaurant.
- Losing her patience with Elektra, she threatens to murder her if she screws up.
- She refuses to be remotely apologetic or accountable when her allies, Murakumi and Madam Gao especially, rightfully oppose her because of how she doesn't believe in anything whatsoever and because of how far she's been taken over by her obsession with the Black Sky and her willingness to risk all their lives just to keep using her. And when Sowande's head is found in the middle of their string of arguments, Reid doesn't care and admonishes her allies for regretting his loss, alienating them even more.
- Even though she suffers a brutal death at Elektra's hands, it's not like it was undeserved.
What Prevents Her from Being Pure Evil?[]
- The MCU has a gargantuan Heinous Standards and you could argue that she slightly fails to pass it, with other human villains having comparable body counts with her only edge over them being her longevity. However, her agenda is a crucial element of the plot of The Defenders not to mention Daredevil and Iron Fist, so this isn't very mitigating at all.
- Even though her actions are mostly irrelevant to her tragedy, it is obvious that she sincerely loves her late daughter.
- She has two Pet the Dog moments: first, when she and Madam Gao feed birds at Central Park, and second, when she donates to classical music performers. She also has moments of genuine affability.
