I taught my children never to unsheathe their blade unless they intend to use it.
~ Ophelia Chau
A Baron never hesitates. A Baron shows no mercy.
~ Alexander Chau

Alexander Chau and Ophelia Chau are minor antagonists in the AMC series Into the Badlands.

They are former rulers of the Fox Territory and the parents of Juliet Chau and Gaius Chau. They are responsible for maintaining the horrific Cog slave trade and for raising their daughter Juliet to be a ruthless and cruel ruler just like the two of them.

Alexander was portrayed by Hon Ping Tang and Ophelia was portrayed by Liz Sutherland.

Their Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Them Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • They are a Baron and Baroness of the Badlands, and the rulers of the Fox Territory, making them the primary operators over the Cog slave trade.
  • They are remarkably cruel even compared to the other Barons, raising their children to be brutal and merciless towards the people who live in their territory, therefore making the two of them responsible for the monster that Juliet becomes.
  • Alexander orders Gaius to beat Minerva with a cane after she drops a tray of glasses, and when he refuses due to having a romance with her, he instead has Juliet do it while Gaius is forced to watch. He then orders Minerva to be locked in the pig pen after Juliet is done beating her.
  • They are shown to be the most prejudiced Barons against Cogs, with Ophelia referring to the former Cog Tilda as a "pet" affirming that they view them as less than human.
  • When Tilda calls Ophelia out on all the pain that their family has caused, Ophelia actually does seem temporarily taken aback and perhaps even remorseful, only to immediately brush it aside and say that she sheds no tears for the pain and suffering she has inflicted, as she believes the weak deserve to die.
  • When Gaius demands to know where his sister is hiding so that he and Tilda can capture her, Ophelia refuses to tell him. He pulls his blade on her and demands to know, but he cannot bring himself to hurt his own mother, at which point Ophelia mocks him over his weakness and inability to kill her.
  • After Gaius' half-brother Deagan reveals Juliet's location to him anyways, Ophelia angrily claims that she will have Deagan's tongue cut out and fed to the pigs.

What Prevents Them from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • They genuinely care about members of their own family, loving each other and their children. Even after Gaius betrays the Chau family in order to free Cogs from their territory and is captured by Juliet for it, Ophelia orders her to keep him alive since he is a member of their family.
  • They suffer too much from off-screen villainy since many of their worst crimes such as operating the Cog slave trade or Alexander ordering his Clippers to kill in his name are not directly shown.
