Akihiro Kanou (嘉納 明博, Kanō Akihiro, in Japanese), also known as Professor Kanou, is the secondary antagonist in the dark fantasy manga and anime series Tokyo Ghoul. He is a doctor at Kanou general hospitaland is responsible for turning Kaneki into a Ghoul.

He was voiced by Kenji Nomura in Japanese and by Mark Stoddard in the English dub.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • He performed various unethical and torturous experiments on humans and ghouls to create artifical One-Eyed Ghouls.
  • Over time he built up an army of Half-Human Ghouls with him being the leader.
  • Aided the Clowns and the Aogiri Tree in their goals of killing all humans, despite him ironically being human.

Background[]

  • While he started as a cheerful child and was a notable and popular student during his years in the University, all of this was subverted after his mother died and he entered to the GFG (the abbreviation for the organization equivalent to the CCG in Germany).
  • During his years in the CCG, he started a project dedicated to the investigation of the addition of Ghoul components in the human body, same project that was criticized due to its immorality, causing him to be fired from the CCG.

Tokyo Ghoul[]

  • He turned Ken Kaneki into a Ghoul by the facade of transplanting him Rize Kamishiro's organs to safe his life, actually transplanting her Kakuhou.
  • He turned the Yasuhisa twins into artificial One-Eyed ghouls and forced them to be his personal body guards, and making them to refer him as his dad.
  • Kidnapped Rize Kamishiro and brutally tortured her and performed several horrific experiments to the point of driving her insane and then stealing her organs.
  • He refered to Kaneki as his "ultimate creation" and tried to persuade him to join the Aogiri Tree.
  • After Kurona arrived with a dying Nashiro in her arms, he coldly indicated her to leave her, as she would die anyway, showing that he didn't care for them despite treating them as his daughters.
  • After the Owl Suppression Operation, he and the Aogiri Tree would used the fallen investigators and Yoshimua's bodies to continue with the experiments.

Tokyo Ghoul:re[]

  • He experimented with sixty-three investigators, of which only one was successful, this being Takizawa.
    • Some of the subjects that weren't successful, such as Koutarou Amon, were considered floppies and he openly showed his disgust and deception towards them and their possibilities to evolve as Kakujas.
  • He both physically and psychologically tortured Takizawa, sadistically expressing his satisfaction when Takizawa showed his new body's characteristics, feeding him with his own parents and subjecting him to physical torture to strenghten him.
  • While he expressed his interest in having a conversation with Dr. Chigyou, and even refered to him as a genius, it's more like he didn't really respect him, but only was interested in his knowledge and experiments such as the Quinx.
  • He manipulated Naki, making him believe that he was capable of reviving Gagi and Guge, just to have his permission to use them as experiments.
  • After Nashiro came to him, asking him to help Nashiro, who she thought was alive in her abdomen, he mockingly told her that he could not revive the dead ones, just to later coldly explain to her that Nashiro wasn't alive, and that the signals that "Nashiro" showed were only a mixing of both Kurona's mind and anatomy.
  • When Kurona and Nishiki Nishio tried to stop him, he sent them some of his failed experiments while he escaped.
  • He, under Kichimura Washuu's orders, created Oggai, a new version of the Quinx conformed entirely by children.
    • While he was following orders, this isn't redeeming in any way, as he had previously showed his interest in the Quinx and he never expressed remorse for it, showing that even if he wasn't ordered to, he would eventually try to imitate the Quinx.
  • In his final moments, he showed satisfaction for seeing all of his objectives succeeded and revealed that he used Rize as source of experiments due to him desiring to have the power of the Washuus.
  • He expressed his lack of remorse before taking his own life, before he could be punished for his multiple crimes.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He genuinely cares about his mother as they had a good relationship and he visited often when she became ill, he was also distraught when she died and gave flowers to her grave meaning that he still cares about her.

Trivia[]

  • He, Yakumo Oomori and Kichimura Washuu are, so far, the three Tokyo Ghoul villains to be NPE. Though, others such as Big Madam, Rize Kamishiro, or Goumasa Tokage could qualify.
