Sakazuki, commonly known by his alias, Akainu is one of the main antagonists of the One Piece anime and manga series. He rose up through the ranks of marines until becoming an admiral alongside Aokiji and Kizaru. During the Paramount War, he was responsible for killing Luffy's brother, Portgas D. Ace. Since the time-skip, he became Fleet Admiral of the marines. He is currently the fleet admiral who believes in Absolute Justice, an ideology about enforcing justice by any means necessary.
He is one of Monkey D, Luffy's arch-nemesis (along with Marshall D. Teach/Blackbeard).
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- During the Buster Call on Ohara, Akainu ordered his men to shoot down a ship full of civilians who were leaving the island. His order led to the deaths of all the civilians on board that ship along with marine personnel evacuating them. In addition, this act horrified his own colleague, Aokiji, and everyone else who witnessed it.
- During the Paramount War, Akainu murders at least one marine soldier for abandoning his post. Akainu expresses disgust at seeing the marine abandon his post and burned him alive with his magma-magma fruit by covering him in lava.
- Akainu manipulates Squard to turn against Whitebeard. This act results in Squard stabbing Whitebeard during the battle.
- Akainu launches his meteor volcano attack upon the Whitebeard Pirates and their allies. The attack destroys multiple ships and kills multiple people.
- When Ace was released from his imprisonment and was leaving the battlefield, Akainu taunts Ace by insulting Whitebeard which leads to Akainu attacking Ace. During this moment, Akainu attempts to attack Luffy, which leads to Ace shielding Luffy and his subsequent death.
- After dealing the fatal blow that would result in Ace's death, Akainu attempts to strike down Ace with a far more powerful attack that would have completely destroyed his body and potentially kill Luffy who was near him.
- Akainu killing Ace leads to Luffy going catatonic from trauma for the remainder of the war. The impact of Ace's death also led to serious health issues for Luffy that Trafalgar D. Water Law had to treat him.
- The murder of Ace also results in breaking Luffy's spirit. To an extent, it pushed him towards nearly giving up on his dream.
- In the manga, while fighting Whitebeard, Akainu launches his magma attack at the latter's face burning away nearly half of his head in the attack.
- Akainu chooses to go after a catatonic Luffy during the Paramount War although Blackbeard and the Blackbeard Pirates invaded the battlefield to endanger many lives. While pursuing Luffy and Jinbe, Akainu severely injures Jinbe by punching through his body with his lava attack to try and kill Luffy. This nearly kills Jinbe and caused lava to pour onto Luffy's chess giving him his x-shaped scar.
- He chooses to escalate the war by ordering the marines to kill off all the pirates on the battlefield although their prime objective of killing Ace has already been achieved.
- He attempts to murder Koby for standing up to him and trying to de-escalate the war to prevent senseless killings. Even though they are both marines, Akainu expresses annoyance of Koby standing up to him since it was taking time away from getting closer to Luffy to kill him.
- When the World Government's role in Doflamingo's tyranny been exposed to the Dressrosa's civilian, Akainu yells at Fujitora for leaking the information and going against the cover-up. Akainu reveals that he is more interested in maintaining a cover-up and does not show any concern for the citizens who survived Doflamingo's tyranny and his attempt to murder all of them.
- While he might seem like a well-intentioned extremist, he is far from one. As he is willing to murder innocent civilians in Ohara, responsible for murdering even his comrades out of simple disagreement, disagree with his superiors such as the five elders and only cares about his power and position in the Navy.
- During his confrontation with Bartholomew Kuma in the Red Line, Akainu delivers his magma attack to Kuma's face burning away a part of his head in the process.
- Akainu use the denden muchi to contact someone else in Egghead and after learning from Kizaru that everyone was collapsed and led their target escape, he angrily tells to him to not slack off, which angers Kizaru for the first time in the series.
- Although it's revealed he had a bit of a rough childhood in the past, it's not a redeeming quality and it certainly doesn’t excuse nor justify his actions or any of the lines he crossed throughout the series as he's far beyond that.
- Despite the high Heinous Standards of One Piece, Akainu stands out for attempting to have the Marines kill off the entire Whitebeard Pirates and their allies, ordering the genocide of the Ohara residents and his personal villainy towards Monkey D. Luffy, as no other villain has impacted Luffy on a psychological level, other than Bartholomew Kuma, and not to mention he managed this with lower resources.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- Despite his lack for empathy for his fellow Marines, he seems to have some care and respect for some of his Admiral colleagues:
- In his duel against Aokiji for the title of fleet admiral, Akainu expresses his frustration over fighting for the position since he values their time as marines. Despite fighting for up to 10 days in a battle, Akainu chooses to spare Aokiji's life.
- He has a genuine friendship with Kizaru, as he sees Kizaru as a 'brother' to him, and when he caused Kizaru to get mad at him for his stubbornness during the Egghead incident, he immediately apologized.
Trivia[]
- Akainu stands out as the first villain responsible for killing a major character, Portgas D. Ace, in the present-day story.
- The fight scene between Akainu and Whitebeard where Akainu burns away nearly half of Whitebeard's head in the manga was altered in the anime to show Akainu burning away nearly-half of Whitebeard's mustache with the same attack without burning his head.
- He was originally approved as Pure Evil, until he was eventually removed because it was decided he spared Aokiji's life out of genuine respect and not for pragmatic reasons.
