NOTE: This is only about the Star Wars Disney Canon version of Trench, and thus the Canon's crimes should be put here. |
“ | I smell fear, and it smells good. | „ |
~ Admiral Trench's famous quote. |
Admiral Trench is a recurring antagonist in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, serving as the main antagonist of "Cat and Mouse," a minor antagonist in "The Unknown," and the main antagonist of the four-episode “Bad Batch” arc.
He is a Harch admiral who fought against the Republic, joining the Confederacy of Independent Systems after cheating death against them and becoming one of their most feared and ruthless admirals.
He was voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, who also voiced the Lighthouse Keeper in What's New, Scooby-Doo?, Ra's al Ghul in the Batman: Arkham franchise, Carnage in Ultimate Spider-Man, Brainiac in LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes and Evil Julian in Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Destroyed several republic ships during the Battle of Malastare, resulting in Yularen losing a few good men that day, as he explains to Anakin.
- Helped the separatists blockade Christophsis, denying food to the population below.
- Bombed Christophsis and Bail Organa to try and put pressure.
- He attempted numerous times to kill Anakin and Yullaren during the battle, assuring the two he was their doom.
- Bombed multiple ships, including other cloaked ships before Anakin's.
- Admitted he enjoyed the "smell" of fear among the Republic ranks.
- Kidnapped Tup to give him to Dooku for study.
- Trying to kill the Bad Batch during the Battle of Anaxes.
- Launching an attack on Fort Anaxes that leaves all but Windu, Obi-Wan, and a few clones dead.
- Out of a final push to win the battle, he orders the detonation of a bomb powerful enough to destroy most of Anaxes, which would kill the clones, Mace Windu, and anyone else on the planet or its vicinity.
- Attempting to capture Anakin, which just results in him frying his own droid with no remorse (meaning his "benevolence" towards his droids is simply him pragmatically not wanting to waste his forces).
- Mocked Anakin Skywalker, threatening to kill him, saying he's a Jedi and is too noble for that. (That is before he slices one of Trench's arms to show he's not playing.)
- Tries to kill Anakin one last time by frying him with an electrostaff.
- While he was loyal to Dooku (he did report to him after seeing Tup kill Tiplar), he subverts it by the Battle of Anaxes, as he follows him out of fear and tells Anakin the way to stop the bomb and thus hold Anaxes out of fear.
- While he used to be affable to Anakin, he drops any affability towards Anakin specifically by taunting him.
- While his death shows how closer Anakin is going to the Dark Side, it's not played for sympathy either, considering he was going to bomb Anaxes in addition to his other crimes, plus Skywalker killed him in self-defense.
- While many villains did worse, Trench has less resources and uses them to the fullest.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- Tells Wat Tambor to pardon his intrusion when he contacts him unexpectedly, showing he is occasionally affable. And when Wat Tambor claims to be neutral and having no involvement in the Clone Wars as an excuse not to listen to him, he rightfully calls him out for having no true loyalty to the Separatist cause, making him a little honorable.
Trivia[]
- Only the canon version of Trench qualifies, as his Legends version has his attempted mundicide omitted due to the seventh season not being part of the Legends continuity, making him fail too hard, and is loyal to Dooku.
- In the unfinished version of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars episode "Unfinished Business," there was a line of dialogue in which Echo reveals that Wat Tambor also fears him and won't report his failure to keep Echo, not just due to the profit loss but because Trench would come for his head. If this line was kept in, it at least arguably would've subverted his "pardon the intrusion" line, making him worse, if not Pure Evil altogether.
- Coincidentally, he fights against Echo, who is PG and is another character voiced by Dee Bradley Baker.
